Gregory Leads Strong WMCCL Showing at Derby National Trophy

Saturday 17 October 2026

West Midlands Cyclo-Cross League riders were out in force at Derby for the opening round of the British Cycling National Trophy, with familiar faces from across the age categories testing themselves against some of the country’s best.

And it was one of our rising stars who stole the headlines, as Gregory Latuszynski (Solihull CC) produced a superb performance to win the Under 14 Open race.

Gregory Takes National Trophy Victory

Gregory, already enjoying an outstanding WMCCL season, completed the four-lap race in 30 minutes 35 seconds, taking victory by just 4.9 seconds in a thrilling contest.

It was a tremendous achievement and further evidence of the talent emerging through our league.

There was plenty of other WMCCL interest in the U14 Open race, with Isaac Weir finishing 25th, Archie Hunt 74th, Bradley Betts 78th and Harrison Jeffery 94th.

Youngsters Fly the WMCCL Flag

Our young female riders also made their mark, with Zofia Latuszynska securing an excellent 12th place in the U14 Female race.

Harriet Cosnett followed in 16th, Nancy Oliver 17th and Isla Furniss 23rd, while Annabelle Whitehouse (28th), Annie Oxley (30th) and Florence Parkinson (32nd) completed a strong showing from familiar league competitors.

In the U16 Open race, Jude White (Mid Shropshire Wheelers) delivered another notable performance, finishing 11th in a highly competitive field. Isaac Vickety whilst not a League Member was 2nd in a great showing for Rotor RT.

Jacob Lattimer (41st), Oliver Howard (42nd) and Charlie Beech (77th) also took on the national challenge, while Jorgie Gillett finished 19th in the U16 Female race.

For our youngsters, racing at this level provides invaluable experience, and it is particularly encouraging to see so many making the step from league racing to national competition.

Masters Show Their Strength

Our veteran riders were equally well represented, with Darren Atkins (MI Racing Townsend Vehicle Hire) producing an excellent sixth place in the Masters 50–59 Open race.

Teammates Nick Whitley and Nick Popham added eighth and 16th places respectively.

In the women’s Masters 50–59 race, Vickie Wilkinson secured an impressive fifth place, with Helen Kirk finishing seventh. Both deserve congratulations for flying the WMCCL flag on the national stage.

The Masters 60–69 Open race saw Mick Davies (Pedal Power Loughborough) finish 14th. Mick is particularly well known to league riders through his work providing timing services at WMCCL events.

David Garrett (MI Racing Townsend Vehicle Hire) was close behind in 16th, while the ever-enthusiastic Peter Mooney (Rugby Velo) secured seventh place in the Masters 70+ race.

Unfortunately, Keith Richards (Mid Shropshire Wheelers) and Sally Reid (Pedal Power Loughborough) were both listed as non-starters, with Keith sidelined by Covid. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Plenty to Celebrate

While Gregory’s outstanding victory provided the headline result, perhaps the most encouraging aspect of the day was the sheer number of WMCCL riders competing across the age groups.

From youngsters gaining their first experiences of national competition to veterans continuing to enjoy the challenge, it was a wonderful demonstration of the enthusiasm and strength of cyclo-cross throughout our region.

A note about our coverage: This report has been compiled by identifying WMCCL league riders within the published National Trophy results. With so many competitors across the categories, we may have inadvertently missed some familiar names, and we apologise to anyone overlooked.

Above all, congratulations to everyone who made the journey to Derby and represented our league so enthusiastically. Whatever your finishing position, it’s fantastic to see so many of you taking part.
