Our Under-10 Male winner for 2024: Lucas Shephard of Stratford CC, was another young rider with a near perfect record. He won nine races – with just one ‘off day’ in Round 2 at Shrewsbury. Calum McAusland won that day, and finished on the podium in seven other races to claim second place in the standings. Ethan Parkes was third.
Like many of the other youngsters who ride the League, Lucas is making friends amongst his competitors. Here are his words.
“I really enjoy all types of cycling, but cyclocross has to be my favourite. I have loved every race of the WMCCL 2024 season, and most enjoy racing with Flynn and Arthur but especially the battles I have had with Calum who is a really good friend.
My favourite course by far was Berryfields, it was fast and long! I prefer the longer courses like Ullenhall and Sandwell, where the field gets stretched out a bit more.
It’s not just the racing for me, it’s the whole day as I get to watch my younger sister Imogen and both my Dad and Mum race, I have even been washing bikes in the pits with Calum for my Dad!
I have been racing the WMCCL for the last 4 seasons and have made some really good friends both from Stratford and other clubs. I have been training with Stratford CC since I was 5, we have some great coaches and the sessions have really helped prepare me for cyclocross this year.
I am disappointed that the season has finished and am looking for other races I can compete at for the rest of the winter. I am also looking forward to the challenge of racing in the U12’s next year.”
