Consistency was the key for our V60-64 winner Mark Mullender of CC Giro. He won two events and was on the podium in four others. That was enough to put him ahead Mike Vaughan and Peter Bromwich in this tightly contested category – in which the top five were separated by only 11 points.
Mark has rediscovered his love of cyclocross. Here’s what he told us.
“Having only ridden a handful of events in the past two seasons I had forgotten how tough cyclo-cross was. I really didn’t expect my fitness to return as quickly as it did but thankfully by my third race this year, I was back up competing with the faster guys – namely Kevin Payton, Peter Bromwich and Mick Vaughan.
I won my third race, at Stratford, which increased my confidence immensely and I’ve remained consistently in the top four ever since. The points in this 60+ category have been closely shared between the top five riders and there has been a good sense of competition between us.
My favourite race this year was the Dynamic Rides event at the Heart of England where the rain was relentless, and the course turned into a very wet mud bath which really suited me.
I’m pleased to say my passion for CX has returned and I’m grateful to the league for organising some fantastic racing.”
